From issuing your pathology request to reviewing your results, Instant Consult makes it simple by handling everything online!
Start from a consultation with one of our doctors, if appropriate, you’ll receive a digital pathology referral letter.
As soon as we receive your results, we’ll notify you via SMS, email, and app. You can then book a follow-up consultation with any of our doctors to discuss the findings.
Prefer to discuss your results with your regular GP instead? No problem—just let us know during your initial consultation, and we’ll arrange for your results to be sent to them. Your GP can also request the results directly from the pathology clinic if needed.
We adhere to strict medical guidelines. This means we cannot send your results directly to you unless they have been reviewed by a medical practitioner first.

Yes! Pathology referrals from a doctor at Instant Consult are accepted at any reputable pathology centre. Most pathology centres will accept pathology request forms from any doctor, regardless of where the request was issued.
Some collection centres may be able to perform certain pathology tests without a doctor’s referral. However, in most cases, you’ll need a referral to ensure you get the right tests for your needs. A referral is also necessary for Medicare coverage.
No. Using a pathology referral more than once with the appropriate exemption is considered fraud against Medicare.
Yes. During your initial consult you can request for your results to be sent to your usual practice where you can discuss your results with your regular GP. Alternatively, you can ask your regular GP to contact the Pathology clinic and have them request your results be sent to them. Please note we cannot send your results to your GP ourselves.
Yes. In order to have your results reviewed by one of our doctors, you must:
Fees are for the consultations itself – not what medical documents are issued to you. Just like any consultation if you were to visit a local medical clinic, we cannot guarantee what medical documents or advise the doctor will issue you. You will have to have a consultation where the doctor will ask about your health history, symptoms and any other details required, so they can make an informed decision as to whether or not the consult will result in a medical document being supplied.
Consults are covered by Medicare and are bulk-billed with a valid Medicare card for patients under 12 months of age only.
Medicare stipulates we cannot bulk-bill any patients who are not under 12 months of age.
Please view the Pricing page.
Pathology Referral forms can be used up to 12 months from your consultation.
For Pathology tests being carried out to be bulk-billed, they need to meet the criteria as set out by the Department of Health and Medicare. If you do not meet these criteria, you are still able to have a Pathology Referral issued to you, however the pathology service will be privately billed.
Please note that even if the Referral you are issued is marked as ‘bulk-billed’ it is ultimately up to the specific Pathology clinic you attend and Medicare’s own bulk-billing criteria on which tests and procedures can and will be claimed.
Yes, we are unable to send you a copy of your Pathology results without discussing them with the doctor first. If you wish to have a copy of your results, please request them to be sent to you during your follow up consultation.
For parents or guardians with children under 17, you can add your child to your account as a dependent. Alternatively, you can create a separate account for your child using a different email address and request a consultation using their account.
Please note that if you are requesting a consultation for a dependent they must be present during the consultation.
